 Go on Vacation!

Hi Everyone
Made a trip home frrom Bethesda, Maryland today from the National Institute of Health. We drove over 300 miles today and made pretty good time.  Our oldest son, Evan (ds) was with us and we all took a turn driving.  John (dh) drove us out of Bethesda and got me to Rt. 68 and then I drove  across Rt. 68 to Waynesboro or Waynesburg, PA (sorry, can't remember the name of the town) then we stopped there and had lunch and Evan drove the rest of the way home.

So let's talk about trips, vacations, drives or road trips.  I remember as a child that I would love to take a ride with my parents and sisters-these almost always happened on Sunday afternoons.  I was raised on a farm and just taking a road trip - just anywhere - was fun for us and something that we looked forward to.  Often, we would end up at an aunt and uncle's place so that we could all visit and us kids would play with our cousins.  As a child, we did not vacation so I was married before I got the pleasure of taking a trip or a vacation.  We didn't have any money when John and I got married almost 35 years (two days short) ago, so we didn't go on a honeymoon.  But after we had children, John insisted that we take trips or small vacations.  I was so excited.  I had never really been anywhere so any vacatoin was fun for me.  I was shocked to find out that I was not the best traveler though-I thought since I wanted to go so badly, I would really enjoy the trip - and but that has not always been the case....
When we were young, we went to Gettysburg and visited battlefields and museums.  I had no idea when I married him that I would see lots and lots of museums and battlefields.  John is a history buff and I (unforunately) was not that interested in history or museums.  But we have adjusted over the years and both have found things that we love and places that we both enjoy.  Although there are some museums that I have seen more than once and could have lived without.  That is not to say that these museums are bad or that you should not visit them, it is just that for me they are not that much fun.
There are all kinds of walking tours-of battlefields and of historical locations - past presdent's homes, in Stauton, VA, there is a walking tour of historical farms-been there and enjoyed that many times.  We always take visitors there and see if they enjoy it as much as we have.
Some day trips have included going to Blue Jay Springs in PA.  I originally thought that there was something to do or see but I later found out that John just wanted a drink from a roadside pipe with water coming down off of a hill.  (Goodness, we would never do that now (or would we?) we have to have our bottled water)
We both loved the walk to the Natural Bridge in Va and beyond to the Lost River showing it's way to surface on our way to the waterfalls.  If only John felt well enough to walk with me down that path.  I would really treasure that.  Oh if I need to I will push him in a wheelchair - for to have him here is better but it would be so nice to have him walk and reach for my hand as we walk down that path.  Would be so nice if he were healthy enough to take that long walk to the falls.  About the Natural Bridge, it was some way from where we were staying and I said "is it really something to see since it is so far to go?" and he said it was ok.  I said when you saw it the first time, was your breath taken away by the site?  No, John said not really - but when I walked around the bend in the path and looked up, I was awe struck.  I could not believe it.  I was overwhelmed by the natural beauty-John had seen it too many times.  I was seeing it for the first time.  I think he loved my reaction and he enjoyed it more because I was excited about it.
Life is a highway or a walking tour at some museum.
The Lost River Museum is one of those places that John and I both find things that we love - when we came past the last time, we didn't get out. We sat in the parking lot and looked up the slight hill and said maybe next time through.  The dog did not come out of the museum to show us the way to the door - makes you wonder because many times that dog has come out to greet us and show us the way to the door.  The owner of the museum states that he considers it his job to meet and greet the visitors.
I am so glad that John insisted that we make the trips - but each time I told him we should not spend the money. We went anyway.  I am glad that we did.  I wish that he had taken the hunting trip that he always wanted to make.  The one out west or to Colorado but he has not gone.  When he gets healthy, I will find the money and insist that he go - and enjoy his walk in the mountains finding whatever he wants to hunt.
The moral of the story is to remember to live your life-that doesn't mean that you can just charge it and go into debt but it means that you should excitedly plan and take that trip where ever it is...and even if you think that you don't like something, try it.  Museums now seem like such a better option than medical clinics and being tired from trips of necessity instead of fun.
