It is pronounced ORYgun NOTÂ Ory-GONE. GRRRRRRRRRR. I have to tell you guys that we Oregonians can totally tell when you aren't from here just by the way you pronounce our state. It is a major pet peeve of most of us.
I went to a website and it told me to how to pronounce town names from here in Oregon, I thought I would share that also. I never even thought of those, it is just how I say them and I didn't know that there where people going around mispronouncing them.
Other local pronounciations
Local names can be confusing to travelers. If you want to sound like a native, here are some local area pronounciations.
Bingen: BIN-gin
Celilo: Sell-LIE-low
Dufur: DO-fir
Klickitat: CLICK-eh-tat.
Rufus: RUE-fuss
Skamania: Skah (short "a" like in "apple")-MANIA
The Dalles: The DAHLs (short "a" like in "apple", the "e" is silent.) Contrary to what any mapmaker may have done to compress the letters in the name, this town's name is two separate words, "The" and "Dalles". It's not Dalles. It's THE Dalles. It's really not pronounced "theedallies" like one traveler who stopped for coffee and directions at the Lone Pine restaurant called it. And please keep us straight in your mind from Dallas, Oregon in Polk County, or Dallas, Texas.
Tygh Valley: Tie Valley
Wasco: WAHS-co (short "a")
Wishram: Pronounced just like it looks: WISH-ram
