the hall that my kids ... and wife ... walked in
is now home to two kittens and their scolding mom.
the rooms we said nightly prayers in are now silent.
the house that raised a family
now reeks of single guy.
"clean" is a strange goal.
i ask, "clean for whom?"
no one lives here.
i merely wander ... lost ... from room to room.
this is the land of broken furniture.
this is the locker of broken dreams.
but i get to start over.
every day i can begin anew
because i affect no one.
how do people do it who are locked into their nightmares?
how do child-slaves wake to meet another day?
where do abused wives find courage in their broken hearts
to smile for their children and hope for their spouses?
i worry and i have great kids.
how do parents make it who have self-destructive kids?
how do children make it
when parents seek unlived life through them?
God is silently planning for all of these in His love.
every tear that is shed is collected.
every bruise gently tended.
every disappointment evicted by hope.
music invades our silences.
dreams accompany us into sometimes stark reality.
the smiles of strangers paint our days.
the absolute poorest dream of a roof.
those with slightly more dream of a floor.
my daughter helped build a one-man box-home
for a homeless man in the islands
who, like me, will always think her an angel.
He splashes the sky into ghetto lots
through the miracle of chicory.
city streets have the song of the country stream
in the music of children's laughter.
life awakens with the sunrise.
the soul is awed to silence at the sunset.
the artificial fire of our many screens
burns into the nights.
we must hunt ... through plastic drawers ... for our food.
i am a great hunter.
the point is that He sneaks beauty and joy
into the fabric of our lives.
at every level,
He keeps the dream alive for better.
every day He dreams for us a better tomorrow.
He is silently planning for us in His love.
if we can't see Him, it is our vision and not His presence
that is missing.
He sneaks to bless us.
how much more will He willingly help
if only we ask?
He longs to give us greater dreams.
amen
