| A womans role in Hip Hop.. |
"Call me Dracula cause all I do is count chips, ya money Minnie, I ain't talkin bout the mouse trick.." Roxanne Shante, Salt & Peppa, Eve, Nicki Minaj.. Names ring a bell? There have been many attempts for women to break out in hip hop but I cannot remember ANY that had any staying power- Salt & Peppa maybe, but hip hop has changed CONSIDERABLY.. Which brings me to the question: What is a woman's role in hip hop? Seems like every time I turn on BET, MTV, hell VH1, women are being portrayed as trophy's- or eye candy... Are there any REAL female MC's left??
As I watching the BET Hip Hop awards 2009 a couple weeks back (very cliche by the way) I came across the cypher with Joe Budden and Nicki Minaj check it out here.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g34FB8HSPxE Truth be told she ripped it!! She may be a little different (lol yes I said different) But she is a breath of fresh air in this male dominated industry.. Now don't get me wrong, I do love hip hop, But what's going on? Seems like we need a couple more Nicki Minaj's to bring hip hop back to its glory. So what is a woman's role? I tell you what it SHOULD be... A BIG ONE. "A man is only as strong as the woman standing BESIDE him.."
