Imagine, you have been found guilty of a crime by a judge and jury and have been sent to prison. You know that if you are lucky and get into no trouble then you wil serve just two thirds of your sentence. Further imagine that you were then out of the blue offered a further 18 weeks reduction in your sentence. Would you take it.? I would. It would mean that instead of serving 2 out of 3 years you would serve just 1 year and 34 weeks. Sounds good dosn't it. Back in the open and sentenced served, slate wiped clean with society. So why in the UK have 40,000 prisoners turned down the chance of these extra 18 weeks and why have they decided to stay in prison for longer then they need too. Allow me to explain to you why. They can watch television when they like, they get 3 good meals a day plus a supper. They get to play on their PS 2's and 3's or their Nintendos or Xbox's without having to pay for the electriity. They get the best of medical treatment and also dental treatment. They dont have to worry about finding rent or paying a mortgage. They don't need to find a job and work like the rest of society who are paying taxes to keep them in prison. They get their clothes laundered and pressed. They have all the heating they need. They have access to a free gym membership. They can get free further education. They can sue the Prison Service under the European Convention of Human Rights because the warders are waking them up at night when they wear their boots and this to noisy for them. Warders now have to wear soft shoes at night when patrolling. They can also sue if they do not get their morning newspaper before 12am. Maybe that's why over 40,000 prisoners have turned down the chance to opt for these extra 18 weeks since it was introduced back in 2000. That is 102 people a week. Wait for this another 42 have been caught trying to break back into prison since 2003 as they cannot cut it on the outside. Oh I forgot mention the parties where alcohol flows freely and drugs are plentyful. The warders turn a blind eye because when they are doped up they are not able to complain or sue. PEOPLE WHO LIVE A DECENT LIFE PAY THEIR TAXES AND TRY TO BRING UP A FAMILY BY WORKING 2 OR 3 JOBS ARE BEING LAUGHED AT NOT ONLY BY OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM, THE GOVERNMENT BUT ALSO BY THESE CRIMINALS. SHAME OF THE GOVERNMENT WHEN OLD PEOPLE ARE DYING BECAUSE THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO HEAT THEIR HOMES AND VETERANS CANNOT GET THE COMPESATION THEY DESERVE WHEN THE RETURN FROM FIGHTING THE WAR FOR FREEDOM. |

It's the same in the states. Prisoners have more rights than I do, 3 hots and a cot, while I bust my butt every day at a job that blows trying to make ends meet.
