| Winter blues |
As fall has come, rain is part of every day and trees have no more than half of their leafs left, many people get depressed. The cause of this winter blues (or more professionally, Seasonal Affective Disorder) is the shortening of the days, the disappearing of all the green in nature and the coldness, which get worse every month after October.
Personally, I don't believe in this depression. I actually have my thoughts about other depressions too, but I will not talk about that because there are many depressions which certainly have a good reason. But about SAD (a funny name too, quite ironic, don't you think?), there really are some reasons to say that it is bullshit.
At first: if it really was bad for human beings to be in the cold and wet situations, why don't we do a hibernation? Many animals do, humans don't, so I thinks it's some kind of meant to be that we don't sleep for the winter months. Secondly, why should you be depressed by the fact that the whole nature is losing its colours for the next three months if you know that it will all come back and stay there for the nine months after that? And why would we be sad about the coldness, in this time where everybody worries about global warming and stuff? Another thing why I don't believe in it: you feel the way you want to feel. I know this is not fully true, if there are really bad situations in your life, you can't totally influence your feelings, but at least a bit. And especially when you claim to only have a winter depression. I mean, look at all the beautiful things, such as the lovely sky in fall, the most incredible rainbows in this season and offcourse the amazing colours of the leafs that have fallen off the trees! Candle lights, sitting in front of the fire, making puppets of chestnuts and acorns, drinking hot chocolate... These things all refer to fall, and then i'm not even talking about some winter habits, such as playing in the snow and ice skating.
I think people make up the weirdest diseases and syndroms only because they don't look further than their first feelings. I believe that if you get home depressed because you have been in the rain for half an hour, you must put away that bad feeling and think: 'Yes, it was bad. But no I am at home, and isn't it cosy and warm in here? Isn't it lovely?'
Winter blues, winter love.
